Back in the day, tree work looked quite different to how it does today.

When I first started, the equipment was basic and fairly limited.  What we had, we made the most of, but it was a far cry from what you’d see on site now.  There were no woodchippers, so everything was dealt with by hand, usually involving us piling it high on a trailer and lashing it all down securely with ropes, and climbing equipment was much simpler than it is today.

In fact, looking back now, some of it feels quite surprising.

When I first came on board at Tree Maintenance, we’d free climb (no fall protection whatsoever) to the top of a tree before setting ropes.  At the time, that was just how things were done.  These days, it’s something we wouldn’t consider.

Safety, as we know it now, didn’t really exist in the same structured way.  There were no written risk assessments, no formal planning, and very little regulation.  You learned on the job, picked things up from the people around you, and worked it out as you went.

That said, we were still highly skilled at what we did.  The difference is that today, those skills are supported by much higher standards.

Now, every job starts with a proper assessment and a team briefing.  Equipment is inspected, work is planned, and everyone knows their role before anything begins.  We work within clear regulations, from working at height through to equipment checks and health monitoring, all designed to reduce risk and protect both our team and our customers.

If you stood on site and watched a team today, you’d notice the difference straight away.  The equipment is more advanced, the work is more organised, and there’s a real culture of safety running through everything we do.

And that matters.

What it means for you as a customer is a much lower chance of anything unexpected happening on your property.

In many ways, the job is more involved than it used to be.

But it’s also better.

Our understanding of trees has improved, too.  Years ago, we might have painted over pruning cuts or removed dead wood as a matter of course.  Today, we know that’s not in the tree’s best interests, so our recommendations have evolved along with our knowledge.

What does this mean for you today?

If you’re comparing quotes or deciding who to use, it’s not always obvious what sits behind the price.

A professional, compliant tree team is working to:

  • Strict safety standards and Arboricultural practices
  • Proper planning and supervision
  • Well-maintained, certified equipment
  • Ongoing training and assessment

All of that takes time, care and investment.

Whilst it might not always be visible at first glance, it plays a big part in:

  • How smoothly the job runs
  • How your property is looked after
  • And how confident you can feel while the work is being carried out

What hasn’t changed, though, is why people call us in the first place.

It’s still about concerns:

After all these years, our role is still the same:  to help people resolve those concerns and make the right decisions for their trees.

The biggest difference is how we do it.
  • Higher standards
  • Safer working
  • More considered decisions.

All of which leads to better outcomes in the long run.

So, at the end of the day, what still matters most is exactly what it always has:
  • A satisfied customer
  • A recommendation
  • A real sense of pride in the work we’ve delivered.

If you’re ever unsure what’s right for your trees, we’re always happy to talk it through.
